Two defensive minefields were laid in the Hauraki Gulf during WWII to protect Auckland. One of these fields consisted of 422 British Mk XIV mines laid in March 1943 near Tiri Tiri Matangi.
Although the field was swept in 1944, this mine was not cleared as it had failed to deploy properly. Royal New Zealand Navy divers recovered it in 1992.
