William Job Wain joined the New Zealand Division of the Royal Navy as a stoker 2nd class in 1922, at age 19. As a Chief Petty Officer he was in charge of the boiler room of HMS ACHILLES at the Battle of the River Plate in 1939. For his calmness and efficiency during the battle he was awarded the Distinguished Service Medal (DSM). Wain continued to serve in the Royal Navy until 1945.
