Phillip James Hunter was born in the United Kingdom in 1897. He joined the Royal Marines, Birmingham, in 1914 aged 17 years. In 1926 he transferred to the Royal Navy and served in a variety of ships and establishments including HMS PHILOMEL, the armed merchant cruiser HMS MONOWAI and the cruiser HMS DIOMEDE.
Phillip Hunter was mobilized for WWII in 1943, being promoted to Warrant Master at Arms. He was released from service in 1945.
