This photograph by Commodore Hale RNZN (Rtd) shows a shore landing party exploring the local country side during the Korean War of 1950-1953. Commodore Hale was a keen photographer and the Navy Museum has recently acquired his personal photographic collection. The 60th Anniversary of the Korean War will be celebrated on the 25th June and the last issue of the White Ensign which will be published in July will reflect this.
The Loch Class frigate HMNZS Kaniere's main armament, the 4 inch gun, was shifted from the naval base to it's new public site at Torpedo Bay on 22 April 2010.
The gun was refurbished by VT Fitzroy in 2009. It was used for both shore bombardment and surface action during the Korean War.
The gun being moved into position beside the Chippie's Shop in the cliff at North Head. The Chippie's Shop was once the lock up for Count Felix Von Luckner, Torpedo Bay's most famous prisoner.
The gun in position. To the right is the door of the Chippie's Shop and beyond that is North Head's man-made tidal pool. This was used for convalescing returned service personnel during WW2.
